Three Steps to a Good Towel
Step 1: Check the Label, Confirm Two Key Indicators
After receiving the product, first turn to the label or packaging instructions and ensure it meets the following two points; these are the bare minimum:
The material ratio must be 80% polyester + 20% nylon (some label it as “polyester fiber + polyamide fiber”). Below this nylon content, the absorbency will be significantly worse.
The weight (GSM) should not be less than 350. If the GSM is not specified, feel it with your hand: it should feel thick, substantial, and fluffy; discard any that are as thin as a cicada’s wing.
Step 2: Feel the Edges, Eliminate Hidden Dangers
Carefully feel the edges of the towel with your fingers:
Good: The edges are a very fine, laser-cut sealed edge, or there may be no stitching at all; the feel is smooth and soft.
Discard: There are obvious, raised, hard edges or stitching. These hard edges, if they trap sand during wiping, are the culprit for scratching the painted surface.
Step 3: Conduct an absorbency test (if a sample is available)
If possible, drip a few drops of water into a corner of the towel:
A high-quality towel will absorb the water instantly, with the droplet spreading quickly.
If the water droplet rolls around on the surface without penetrating, it means the fibers are clogged by fabric softener or filling, resulting in poor absorbency. Do not buy it.
Two common pitfalls to avoid:
Don’t buy towels that claim “lint-free” as their sole selling point: Many inferior towels use low twist or add chemical coatings to prevent lint, which greatly reduces absorbency and cleaning power. High-quality microfiber towels are naturally lint-free under normal use, so this doesn’t need special emphasis.
Buy different colors separately: It’s recommended to use light colors (such as blue or yellow) for the car body and dark colors (such as black or gray) for the wheels and chassis. This way, even if there is color bleeding or stubborn oil stains, it will be easily noticeable, and it avoids cross-contamination.
